Teddy Turner, the son of media magnate Ted Turner, is hoping to grab South Carolina’s open congressional seat and urges South Carolina voters to choose him over “career politicians” in his latest television ad.
The 30-second television ad features an actor holding a wine glass in front of a fireplace aims to seduce the viewer–a clear jab at his primary opponent, former Gov. Mark Sanford — pleading with the viewer to take him back. “I know I’ve spent too much, but what’s a few trillion? It was all for you, but I’ve changed. I’ll keep my promises this time, it’ll be different. I’m sorry for all the mistakes I’ve made. Sugar, just give me one more chance?”
The ad then cuts to framed photographs of the other Republican candidates competing against Turner in the primary, including the former governor, who is apologizing to South Carolina viewers after using state funds during an extramarital affair in 2009. The narrator states, “Break up with career politicians. The right guy? Teddy Turner. Conservative Republican. Economics teacher. Not a politician.”
Since Sanford’s official announcement, he has been on his redemption tour and admitted his personal failures, but vowed that he never failed the taxpayers. Sanford told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie on the TODAY show, “If you look at my 20 years in politics, what you’d see is a fairly remarkable consistency in trying to watch out for the taxpayers.”
Turner faces 15 other Republicans in his primary race in the state’s special election for the 1st District House seat. Two Democrats, including Elizabeth Colbert Busch, sister of Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, are facing off to win the Democratic primary. The congressional seat the candidates are hoping to fill was left vacant by current Sen. Tim Scott after he was appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley to replace former Sen. Jim DeMint, who resigned late last year to head a conservative think-tank, the Heritage Foundation. The Republican primary is scheduled for March 19, while the general election will be held on May 7.
