Willard M. Romney walked away with a victory in Maine over the weekend. Bragging rights, not so much.
Less than 6,000 Republicans actually voted in the caucus. That’s only 2 percent of the state’s registered GOP voters. (With freezing dead-of-winter New England temps, can you really blame them for being lazy?) Romney got 39 percent of the vote, Ron Paul came in a close second with 36 percent, Santorum got 18 percent and Newt Gingrich nabbed 6 percent out of the people who bothered to show up.Ron Paul’s camp claims they could still win Maine because one county postponed voting until later this week. Romney beat Paul by a slim 194 votes, at least as of now.
Two new polls suggest Willard actually needs to watch his back for another presidential contender — the man in the sweater vest ensemble. Word on the street, according to a PPP poll, is Santorum has taken the lead in Michigan’s upcoming primary.A Pew Research Center survey found among registered Republican voters, Santorum came in first with 30 percent, Romney came in second at 28 percent, followed by Newt Gingrich at 17 percent, and Ron Paul at 12 percent.And a new Gallup poll, also conducted last week, puts Romney in the lead at 32 percent among registered GOP voters, Santorum at 30%, Gingrich at 16%, and Paul at 8%. And so the GOP’s endless quest for a Mitt Romney alternative continues.
