While Mitt Romney joined the chorus of Republicans Tuesday calling on Congressman Todd Akin to finally “exit the Senate race” after comments on “legitimate rape” and abortion, the presidential candidate appears to be at odds with the GOP’s overall abortion messaging.
Ahead of the upcoming RNC, the Republican platform committee approved strict anti-abortion platform language in Tampa, Florida this morning which calls for a constitutional amendment banning all abortions. The specific wording did not include exceptions in the case of rape or incest.
Romney recently suggested he may have more flexibility on the issue, contradicting today’s preliminary approval. Following Akin’s batcrap crazy comments, the Romney campaign issued a statement reading, “Gov. Romney and Congressman Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin’s statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape.”
The timing couldn’t be more awkward for Romney who would probably much rather be talking about the economy on the campaign trail verses to the increasingly conservative views of members of his party.
Convention delegates are scheduled to vote on the party’s official platform on Monday. The GOP’s latest abortion stance remains consistent with similar platform language of 2004 and 2008.
