Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus returned to his home state of Wisconsin this week and gave a WISN reporter the latest excuse for what went wrong with Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign.
“In a nine-month operation, which is basically what the Romney team put together and the RNC, I think they ran a great campaign—a nine-month campaign,” Priebus said. “But the problem was the other side ran a four-year campaign, a pretty good four-year campaign.”
Priebus went on to say he believes the presidential campaign needs to be a four year operation.
Priebus has officially launched his re-election bid, so he has a lot of excuses to make.
Let’s take a look at how “great” the Republican campaign was.
It was so “great,” Barack Obama became the first president in more than five decades to win at least 51% of the national popular vote twice (remember when Priebus compared Obama to an Italian cruise ship captain accused of manslaughter?).
The Republican campaign was also “great” at focusing on women!
Priebus is right, maybe Republicans just needed a few more years to let the Todd Akins of the party redefine rape and to push a party platform that would ban abortion with no exception and limit access to contraception.
President Obama only won the female vote by 12 points.
The Romney campaign was also “great” at dividing the nation by class. Maybe the 47% of Americans who Romney was secretly caught on camera talking about to a group of wealthy donors just needed a few more years of being told they were “dependent” and felt entitled to “free stuff”. Maybe then 60% of Americans who make less than $50,000 a year wouldn’t have voted for President Obama. Romney’s campaign was so “great” that it must have had an effect on the down ballot races! Despite GOP attempts to suppress the vote, to gerrymander districts within an inch of their life and generally cheat their way to a win, Republicans lost six seats in the House and Senate Democrats expanded their majority. If losing on all those fronts and allowing the party’s message to be hijacked by extremists who don’t see eye to eye with American voters is “great,” then keep up the “great” work Reince.
