As anyone who participates in social media knows, once you press enter and send your message, there’s no going back. This was the case on Tuesday night with a tweet to more than a million people from Dr. Phil’s Twitter account. The Tweet read, “if a girl is drunk, is it okay to have sex with her? Replay Yes or No to @DRPHIL #teensaccused. While the Tweet was quickly deleted by Dr. Phil (who didn’t personally send it), it still has life in the internet.
“This is not the first time we have seem someone with over a million followers tweet something out that has caused a stir online,” Cycle co-host Abby Huntsman said on Thursday’s show. The reality is “in the world we now live in we talk in 140 characters. We need to think twice about the things that we send out, but we also need to not be so quick to judge the minute we read a tweet from someone.”
According to a survey by Pear Analytics, 40% believe Twitter is a place of pointless babble, while 37% see it as a form of conversation, and 5% use it for self-promotion. “There is a huge revolution in how we converse. For millennia, people have been having all kinds of causal conversations,” Ari Melber said. “With 200 million people on Twitter you have this conversation being much more visible than ever before.”
