Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been sent to the Middle East to try and broker peace between the Palestinians and Israel. The two sides have reached day seven of the rocket launches which has left more than 100 dead and has put the Middle East region on the brink of war.
President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton were both attending a summit of Asian leaders in Cambodia over the past few days and after the two discussed the Middle East decision, they decided it was best for Secretary Clinton to depart for the region and try to find a peaceful resolution. She is set to meet first with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, followed by talks with Palestinian President Abbas. While many of her trip details have not been released, Secy. Clinton will not meet with representatives of Hamas, which is a longstanding U.S. policy.
While there is still a political fight over Secretary Clinton’s successor in Washington, one thing is clear: the outcome of her visit to the Middle East will have major diplomatic effects, and could even impact her successor.
