On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in closely watched cases challenging the Affordable Care Act. The question being debated is this — does the health care law violate the religious freedom of private employers by requiring them to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives?
Hobby Lobby (a chain of craft stores), Mardel Christian bookstores, and Conestoga Wood Specialties are the three companies challenging the mandate, arguing that providing birth control coverage — even for the morning-after pill — violates their religious freedom.
While a ruling isn’t expected until June, many gathered outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday to ensure their voices were heard. Those who favor the companies chanted, “my faith, my freedom, my business.” Those who favor contraceptive coverage said: “Women must decide their fate. Back off boss, my health can’t wait.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood, two pro-choice groups that launched campaigns to raise awareness for the case, urged people to head to the Supreme Court to rally in support of contraceptive coverage. Creating the slogan Not Your Bosses Business , the two groups sent out mass emails encouraging their supporters to show their stance. “Women and families should determine what medications they need,” the NARAL website says. On Tuesday, the NARAL and Planned Parenthood campaigns went viral as timelines became flooded with the hashtag #NotMyBossBusiness.
