Jim Carrey wasn’t on the NRA’s enemies list before, but he just might top it now.
Carrey, a longtime outspoken gun control advocate via Twitter, took to a new medium on Monday: Song and dance.
In his new “Funny or Die” skit entitled “Cold Dead Hand,” the funnyman impersonates the late actor turned NRA spokesman Charlton Heston on the country music show “Hee Haw.”
“It takes a cold dead hand to decide to pull the trigger. It takes a cold dead heart, as near as I can figure,” Carrey croons to himself as Heston, singing as country bumpkin Lonesome Earl.
The tune paints gun owners as nutcases trying to compensate for their physical shortcomings, complete with an anatomy lesson and a quip pointed at Heston: “Your chariot may not be swinging low.”
The admittedly catchy melody is sustained by the best back-up in the business: John Lennon on the guitar, Abe Lincoln on the cello, and Mahatma Gandhi on the maraca (all victims of gun violence).
Carrey took to Twitter to defend his parody:
