The former Secretary of State leads NJ Governor Chris Christie 48 to 35 percent among Iowan voters according to a Quinnipiac Poll released Thursday. These new numbers are a remarkable shift in Iowa support from this past December when a poll showed Christie topping Clinton 45 to 40 percent.
Clinton also leads other potential GOP contenders like Senator Rand Paul 49 to 39 percent, Senator Ted Cruz 51 to 25 percent and former Governor Jeb Bush 51 to 37 percent.
While Iowans may be rooting for Clinton, their support does not fall along the party line. The poll revealed that 39% of Iowans approve of the job President Obama is doing while 57% disapprove.
“Politics is a team sport and the head of the blue team, President Barack Obama, isn’t doing well in the eyes of Iowans. But that doesn’t seem to be hurting teammate Hillary Clinton who swamps potential 2016 Republican competitors among the same electorate,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, in a statement.
However, 55% of those polled in Iowa believe Clinton would make a good president while only 25% believe Vice President Biden would be able to fill the role. In contrast, only 36% of voters believe Governor Christie would make a good president compared to 46% who said he would be back in December. “Who said, ‘All politics is local?’ Secretary Clinton is benefitting from the fallout after a traffic jam a thousand miles away,” said Brown. “When Quinnipiac University surveyed Iowans last December, Gov. Christopher Christie was the lead reindeer,” Brown said. “But after the coverage of the George Washington Bridge lane closures, his nose is not so bright.”
