Today’s installment of campaign-related news items that won’t necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:
* We don’t know how much longer Newt Gingrich will be a presidential candidate, but for at least for now, he’ll get Secret Service protection.
* A new Public Policy Polling survey helps show why former Gov. Angus King (I) has shaken up Maine’s Senate race so dramatically: in a three-way contest, he leads the pack with 36%, followed by Chellie Pingree (D) at 31%. Republican Charlie Summers is a close third with 28%.
* Wasting no time, Mitt Romney’s super PAC is already targeting Rick Santorum in Alabama and Mississippi, which will hold their nominating contests next week.
* In Indiana, the National Rifle Association has decided to throw its support to Sen. Dick Lugar’s Republican primary challenger, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
* In New York, a new Siena poll shows Romney leading the GOP pack, but in a general election, he trails President Obama in the Empire State by 26 points. * Though Romney continues to push an “electability” line, PPP shows Santorum faring better against Obama than Romney. * In Alabama, Rep. Spencer Bachus (R) is hoping to get out in front of the ethics investigation dogging him, releasing an ad blaming “Obama’s Democrat allies” for his alleged transgressions. * And while plenty of us find Super Tuesday exciting, Rick Santorum’s son looked a little bored last night. Unlike Newt Gingrich yesterday, however, he did not fall asleep.
