Today’s edition of quick hits:
* Additional information about yesterday’s bombings in Boston continues to come to light, including the identities of the victims and new details about the explosives themselves.
* Also note, President Obama will travel to Boston on Thursday.
* A 7.8-magnitude earthquake: “Southeast Iran was hit by the most powerful earthquake to strike the country in 40 years on Tuesday, and its reverberations were felt as far away as India, but Iranian officials said the tremor had originated so deep underground, and in such a sparsely populated area, that it caused relatively few casualties and only minor damage.”
* Mississippi: “A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked Mississippi from revoking the license of the state’s only abortion clinic. U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III extended an injunction he issued several months ago, which blocks the state from closing the clinic while it tries to fulfill a 2012 state law.”
* Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) spent the afternoon complaining about the wording of a symbolic resolution honoring former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. I can think of better uses for his time.
* If the Yankees and Red Sox can stand united, America’s enemies have clearly lost.
* Oops: “A year ago, Rep. Jack Kingston was so concerned about the National Guard’s shriveling budget that he wanted it to ‘take a pass’ on major events like ‘the Boston Marathon.’” He stressed the sequestration budget cuts.
* That’s a problem: “Hospitals make money from their own mistakes because insurers pay them for the longer stays and extra care that patients need to treat surgical complications that could have been prevented, a new study finds.”
* Former Rep. Connie Mack IV (R-Fla.) has a new lobbying gig. He’ll work at the same firm as his former senator father, who already enjoys a nice lobbying gig, and in the same building as his former congresswoman wife, who also has a nice lobbying gig. * Glenn Beck referenced the Boston bombing as a possible reason to buy gold. No, seriously. * You may not have considered the New York Post credible before, but yesterday was an especially awful day for the Murdoch-owned paper. * And on a related note, interest in “Roof Man” among some media conservatives is so ridiculous, it’s hard not to wonder if this is some insensitive attempt at humor. Alas, by all indications, they’re not kidding. Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.
