Today’s edition of quick hits.
* The latest from Fort Stewart: “Five soldiers are in stable condition and expected to recover from their injuries after a shooting Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart Army base in Georgia, officials said. At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division said the investigation into the incident is still ongoing and authorities are not yet releasing the identities of the victims.”
* The White House targets New Delhi again: “President Donald Trump said he was doubling tariffs on India from 25% to 50%. In an executive order, Trump says ‘I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil’ and due to those purchases, imports of Indian goods into the United States ‘shall be subject to an additional … rate of duty of 25%.’”
* Skepticism is warranted: “President Trump intends to meet in person with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia as soon as next week, and he plans to follow up shortly afterward with a meeting between himself, Mr. Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, according to two people familiar with the plan.”
* In Chicago: “Democratic state legislators from Texas were evacuated from their suburban Chicago hotel Wednesday morning following a threat at the property, and a news conference set to feature Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin was canceled. Later in the morning, Gov. JB Pritzker authorized Illinois State Police to become involved in protecting the lawmakers.”
* This really isn’t what FEMA is for: “The Department of Homeland Security has reassigned dozens of Federal Emergency Management Agency employees over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help vet and process new hires for the government’s mass deportation initiative.” * Reading this, I’m not sure whether the goal is to turn teenagers into ICE agents or to bring in more middle-aged and older recruits: “The Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday that it is removing age limits for new hires at the agency responsible for immigration enforcement, as it aims to expand hiring after a massive infusion of cash from Congress.” * What could possibly go wrong? “In past Olympic Games held on American soil, sitting presidents have served in passive, ceremonial roles. President Trump may have other plans. An executive order signed by Trump on Tuesday names him chair of a White House task force on the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.” See you tomorrow.
