Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* Lara Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law and a former Republican National Committee official, announced over the weekend that she no longer wants to be considered for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to soon choose a successor to Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who’ll be nominated to serve as the next secretary of state.
* Speaking of the Sunshine State, former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz appeared at a conservative event over the weekend and said he’s eyeing a bid for statewide office in 2026.
* In Minnesota, will Democrats lose their narrow majority in the state House because one legislator failed to meet the residency requirements for his district? It’s a distinct possibility.
* After making massive investments on Republicans’ behalf in the 2024 election cycle, billionaire Elon Musk last week also announced plans to invest in Democratic primary candidates in upcoming races.
* In Arizona, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes recently suggested that he was considering a primary challenge to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, but he told The Washington Post that he will instead seek a second term in 2026. * After two failed U.S. Senate campaigns — one in Massachusetts, the other in New Hampshire — former Republican Sen. Scott Brown is apparently eyeing a comeback bid. “Is there another run? Yeah, I think so,” he told WMUR last week. “I’m obviously looking at it.” * And in Texas, Republican Rep. Chip Roy easily won another term last month, but Trump wants his next campaign to be far more difficult: After Roy defied the president-elect’s wishes last week, Trump called for the congressman to face a primary challenger in 2026, adding that Roy is “just another ambitious guy, with no talent.”
