House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) decided to have a little fun on Twitter this afternoon, celebrating the 37th time he and his colleagues have voted to repeal health care reform. Issa’s idea: push the #ObamaCareInThreeWords hashtag and wait for the hilarity to ensue.
Of course, plenty supporters of the Affordable Care Act took advantage of the opportunity — some examples made me laugh out loud — including the White House itself.
This wouldn’t ordinarily be especially interesting — of course the Affordable Care Act is the law; the White House is proud of it; and the GOP repeal crusade is easy to mock — except I found the reaction to the tweet interesting.
Rep. John Fleming (R-La.), for example, said the White House tweet is evidence of a larger “intimidation” strategy. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) went further, calling the tweet proof of the “arrogance of power.” I haven’t the foggiest idea what these people are talking about. It’s “intimidating” and “arrogant” to describe federal law as federal law? Since when? Isn’t it far more “intimidating” and “arrogant,” especially for the uninsured, to try to scrap families’ benefits, coverage, and protections, and replace them with nothing, just to pander to unhinged activists?
