The two main groups of creditors arguing they’re entitled to that money are public employees and retirees, and bond holders. The investors are likely to make out better, since more of that debt is secured; Most of the pension debt has no similar backstop..City residents will likely suffer a lack of anything other than the most rudimentary public services for a long time, but the impact is likely to be felt most keenly by those who lost a large chunk of the retirement they were counting on. City manager Kevyn Orr somewhat optimistically hopes the city can emerge from bankruptcy by the fall of 2014, calling the move a tool to “put this city on a footing that is sustainable so it can continue to thrive.” What are the prospects for the Motor City’s future? Whatever happened to all of those scandals the GOP was so worked up about earlier this year? Despite Darrell Issa’s persistence, the uproar over the IRS’ alleged targeting of political groups has officially become the biggest scandal that wasn’t. As is so often the case, Issa wouldn’t let details like facts stand in the way of a good narrative, at one point alleging “this was a targeting of the President’s political enemies effectively, and lies about it during the election year so that it wasn’t discovered until afterwards.” In a piece in The AtlanticWire, Philip Bump pokes a couple of holes in Issa’s theory, noting it was a conservative Republican staffer that started collecting the Tea Party groups together, and that “House Democrats found other examples of targeting focused on liberal groups and names.” Yet Issa remains determined to keep digging, writing an editorial in Thursday’s USA Today titled “IRS Tea Party Trail Leads to DC”. Is there any chance of that all of this might lead to an examination of the real issue, namely a broken campaign finance system that allows these so-called “social welfare” groups to influence elections ? (Hint: No) And then an important segment about grilling. I think I’m reading that right. It all happens at Noon EDT, then you are free to commence your weekend revelry.
