Millions of Americans painted their Twitter accounts with a splash of purple on Thursday, taking a visible stance against bullying and showing support for vulnerable LGBT youth. The message behind #SpiritDay, a media campaign sponsored by GLAAD, was this: Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness.
“Remember that you are stronger than any bully,” MSNBC host Kate Snow told viewers who have experienced bullying and harassment on Thursday. “And when Spirit Day ends, keep being proud to be yourself every day of the year.”
