Every year, millions of Americans change their social media photos purple to take a visible stand against bullying. The message behind #SpiritDay, which is sponsored by GLAAD, is simple: Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness.
One in four kids experience bullying, and that number is far higher among LGBT youth: eight in 10. On this day, youth who are bullied are reminded that they shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for help. And those who see bullying are reminded that being a bystander isn’t an option. Because it’s only through these conversations that a world free of bullying, harassment and shame can become a reality.
