President Obama’s executive order to stop deporting young illegal immigrants is polling well among the public, including independent voters, finds a new poll from Bloomberg.
The poll shows 64% agree with the president’s policy, while 30% disagree. As expected, those who identify as Republican or Democrat are split on the issue along party lines: 56% of Republicans oppose the move, while a whopping 86% of Democrats support it.
Interestingly, independent voters support the president on this issue more than 2 to 1, or 66% to 26% – a voting bloc that both campaigns are attempting to woo, not to mention the Latino vote.
Republicans have largely panned the president’s announcement as strictly politically motivated or even an abuse of executive power. However, they’ve been hesitant to call directly for a repeal of the order issued last Friday. In light of the Bloomberg poll, as well as one showing Hispanics support for it, it’s no surprise. New figures from the Democratic leaning Public Policy Polling group shows Obama has gained 9 points on Romney in terms of favorability among Hispanic voters since the president issued the executive order.
