Rocky Balboa has nothing on Mitt Romney.
In a new video, the former GOP presidential nominee flexes his literal and comedic muscles to promote an upcoming charity boxing match against ex-heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield.
“You’ve heard my critics say that I’m ‘out of touch,’ that I’m stiff, that I just don’t relate to people. For years I’ve been listening to garbage like that and I’ve decided to fight back,” a suited-up Romney says directly to the camera. “How do you do that? By taking on the former heavyweight champion of the world.”
Romney raises his hands to reveal boxing gloves — cue an epic training montage for the ages.
The 68-year-old Republican jokes that he’s taking the fight “very seriously,” even though he’s shown taking a cell phone call while an assistant lifts weights for him. Romney admits he doesn’t “have much of a right hook, but when I get someone’s ear, I can be pretty formidable.” Holyfield infamously had part of his ear bitten off in a heavyweight bout against Mike Tyson in 1997.
Holyfield himself is no slouch in the trash-talking department. The 52-year-old fighter says he is too “quick and agile” for Romney and taunts the ex-governor “to come get your whoopin’.” The “fight,” which in the video is being billed as “two legends” going “head to head,” will take place on May 15 at a black-tie event in Salt Lake City, Utah. The proceeds will go to CharityVision, an organization based in the state which helps doctors in developing countries perform surgeries to treat people with curable blindness. “Last year CharityVision performed almost 40,000 surgeries in some of the poorest countries in the world,” Romney says at the end of the video. “We’re coming together on May 15 to raise money so that we can do the same kind of work next year. We hope you’ll support us.”
