Former Senator and presidential contender Bob Dole was hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Tuesday.
The 89-year-old underwent a “routine procedure,” according to his aides. A member of Dole’s staff told NBC News that the former Senate majority leader checked in Tuesday for the procedure and expected to be released Wednesday.
“He’s doing very well,” the aide said.
After losing his bid for the presidency to Bill Clinton in the 1996 election, Dole became a popular media figure, appearing on the late night talk shows and serving as a product spokesman. Dole alluded to his life post-presidential run in a September editorial for The Washington Post. “The discovery by others that I had a sense of humor led to an improbable career pitching Visa, Dunkin’ Donuts and Viagra. (Any second thoughts I may have entertained about the latter were put to rest by a couple of wives who approached me in airports to say, simply, “Thank you, Senator.”)”
