Chuck Burgio’s house in Lindenhurst, N.Y., was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy 10 months ago. He had been living in local motels, but his federal aid ran out, and he had nowhere to go, he told NBC 4 New York in an interview this week.”Where am I going to go? I have no money,” Burgio said on NBC 4.Now, NBC 4 reports that he’s living in his backyard behind his house that’s still in ruins from last October’s storm. His makeshift home consists of an air mattress, patio table and gym equipment. He’s accepting food from charities, going to the bathroom at a local diner and getting help from neighbors.Hurricane Sandy and the catastrophic storm surge it drove along the East Coast cost the U.S. an estimated $50 billion in damages, making it the second costliest cyclone to hit the country since 1900. Much of Burgio’s neighborhood was destroyed by massive flooding. His neighbors were able to rebuild, but he was not.However better days might be on the horizon for Burgio, after a benevolent citizen dropped by with a gift.”He just came here and put $500 in my hand and told me he’s going to do this whole house for nothing,” said Burgio.
