Decades ago, women often married soon after college—if they went to college—and rarely worked outside the home.
Now as women are achieving more degrees than men and increasingly taking over the role of breadwinner, they’re choosing to go it alone—at least when they’re young—according to a New York Times article.
Young girls are being told “you can be a CEO, you can be a Supreme Court justice, you can be president, but to do that, you have to work really hard, you have to get into the right schools and do everything right and you have to be independent,” article author Kate Taylor said on Monday’s Morning Joe. “You can’t attach yourself to some guy and make decisions based on that.”
Taylor’s piece found that instead, women were turning to hookup culture while they pursued their goals and found that many were more comfortable with the romance-free hookup environment.
But others saw a flip side: a generation of women who are being pushed away from relationships. “I feel like when I talk to young women and tell them it’s OK to want to get married, to say to a guy that you want out of the relationship and walk away if he can’t deliver it for you, these women look so relieved, like they’re being made to feel bad if they actually want something that’s quite good,” Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski said. “It’s sort of the attitude that young women have to give the middle finger to some of the most fundamentally important things in life and throw it away so they can act like men.” What do you think of hookup culture?
