President Obama isn’t waiting for the fiscal cliff to be resolved before pushing for gun control.
On Monday, the president and vice president began speaking with the White House staff and several Cabinet members about gun control solutions, the Washington Post reported. Included in the meeting were Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Attorney General Eric Holder and Kathleen Sebellius, the Secretary of Health.
Vice President Biden, who spoke out against guns in his years in the Senate, will lead the charge for gun control, the Washington Post reported.
Since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 27 people—including 20 children—dead, a number of politicians have vowed to introduce policy to combat guns, particularly assault weapons like those used in by the shooter in Newtown on Friday.
Democratic Sens. Harry M. Reid, D-Nev., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Mark Warner, D-Va. —all who had voted in favor of looser gun laws in the past—announced that they were open to addressing the issue. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said on Sunday that she’d reintroduce legislation to reinstate the assault-rifle ban that expired eight years ago. Manchin, speaking on Morning Joe, said that “seeing the massacre of so many innocent children has changed everything.” In the House, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., encouraged the House to take up a ban in high capacity clips, calling them “assault magazines” because they make “every weapon it’s compatible with an assault weapon.”
