Tuesday’s Election Day will be a referendum on President Obama, a former White House chief of staff said Tuesday on Morning Joe.
“I think he’s going to be the big loser on this Election Day,” said Andy Card, former White House chief of staff for President George W. Bush.
Obama received his lowest approval rating last week amid problems with the government’s health care website.
“President Obama has lost the confidence of telling the truth to the American people,” Card said. “Words matter when they come out of the president’s mouth.”
But the president isn’t the only one to blame, he said. People who work closely with the president allowed him to mislead the country about health care.
“I think there were a lot of people who knew what the president was saying, they knew that it wasn’t accurate, but nobody was correcting it,” he said from College Station, Texas. “I think there should be a little mea culpa at the White House, not just from the president but from all the people around the president.” Tuesday’s election will also test the Tea Party and role of moderates in the country, Card said. “I’m not sure there is going to be a clear resolution,” he said. “We want the government to work better, but we don’t want it to stop working…We need people who are there to help solve problems and get them done.” Watch more on Morning Joe:
