Oh, you didn’t know that there was an election on Tuesday? Well, you’re not alone.
Tuesday’s election is an “off-year” election which means it will probably receive the lowest voter turnout compared to mid-term elections and presidential elections. But a few of these races could have a significant impact on the country and the 2016 election, specifically, the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.
On Sunday’s Melissa Harris-Perry, our host and panel will discuss why we should care about who wins in these states and what it will mean for future elections.
This week, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which serves 47 million Americans, took a $5 billion cut when stimulus funding from the Recovery Act of 2009 expired. More than 80% of SNAP benefits go to households with children, the elderly or to those with disabilities. Join us Sunday for a larger discussion on the effect these cuts are having on some of the most vulnerable individuals in our country. Here in #nerdland we have a bit of an obsession with Scandal–and especially with its leading lady, Kerry Washington. So when we found out she was hosting Saturday Night Live right down the hall from us, we all had a bit of a hard time focusing. Washington is only the ninth black women to host SNL which has aired more than 700 episodes since it premiered on October 11, 1975. But Washington is not the only black girl that rocks. On Sunday’s MHP, Melissa and her panel will highlight Black Girls Rock, an organization that works to build the self-esteem and self- worth of young black women.
