Just when you thought you could stop hearing about Sharknado, it’s made its way into health care politics with “ObamaCareNado.”
Crossroads GPS, a conservative political group backed by Karl Rove, created a dramatic movie trailer parody that takes jabs at the Affordable Care Act while interspersing disaster clips from Syfy’s social media sensation film Sharknado and short bites from recent news reports.
In the video, a booming, theatrical voice declares, “Just when you thought it was safe to go to the doctor… a rising tide of health care costs… nobody is safe from its wrath.” It finishes, “Obamacare, leading a path of destruction through our economy… the perfect storm is coming. Are you ready?”
“ObamaCareNado” arrives just as the debate over the benefits of Obamacare breaks back into the national spotlight.
President Obama hosted a White House event Thursday with people who will directly benefit from the law’s implementation, reiterating its aim to lower insurance prices while expanding coverage to people who couldn’t get covered before.
“Yes, that was the latest Academy Award-winning blockbuster by Karl Rove-backed media powerhouse Crossroads GPS,” Martin Bashir said Thursday on msnbc, “but at least it’s a bit more creative, if not more productive than the last effort by John Boehner’s studios.” After numerous members of Congress stood on the House floor and argued for hours over the health care law’s merits, the House of Representatives voted Wednesday to delay for one year two key parts of the Affordable Care Act. The votes were the 38th (and 39th) times the House has voted to repeal, defund, or change some part of the law since Republicans took over in 2011.
