Congressman Louie Gohmert said Monday that children should not be forced to sit through sexual education classes.
“You don’t have to force this sexuality stuff into their life at such a point,” Gohmert said on the conservative radio program WallBuilders Live. “It was never intended to be that way. They’ll find out soon enough.”
He continued, “Mankind has existed for a pretty long time without anyone ever having to give a sex-ed lesson to anybody.”
Gohmert also discussed the need for parents to be more involved in the education system and what their children are learning, and that it was “a law of nature” that liberals were trying to take away.
“It reminds me so much of the summer that I was an exchange student in the Soviet Union back in the ’70s and I was shocked when they were saying, ‘No, the children don’t belong to parents, they belong to the state’…and I just thought how horribly shocking that was, that of course parents were the ones who love the children, not the state. And I thought thank God that we don’t have that in our country.” There are currently 22 states that require sexual education in public schools, and 33 states that require students receive instruction about HIV/AIDS. In addition, 37 states also require that school districts allow parents to be involved in sexual education programs, and 35 states allow parents to opt-out of classes on behalf of their children.
