Today, August 14, marks the end of an era in San Francisco: Candlestick Park is closing. Tonight, Sir Paul McCartney will play the stadium’s final event, almost 48 years to the day of The Beatles’ final live concert ever.

1. Throwback Thursday! Opening day was April 12, 1960 and then-Vice President Richard Nixon threw out the park’s first pitch!
2. Willie Mays made history in 1970 when he made his 3,000th hit there.
