Is U.N. ambassador Susan Rice’s expected nomination for Secretary of State dead in the water?
More Republican senators are coming out against the expected appointment, citing the mishandling of information about the Benghazi attack on September 11th.
“I just believe she has disqualified herself to be the Secretary of State,” Senator John Barrasso, R-Wy, member of the Senate Foreign Relation Committee told Jansing & Co. “If the President wants an easy confirmation hearing what he should do is nominate John Kerry.”
Rice spent yet another day Wednesday trying to convince skeptical senators about what happened five days after the embassy attacks that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Rice met with Senator Susan Collins, R-Me, after previously sitting down with three of her biggest critics, Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Kelly Ayotte.
On September 16th, Rice had gone on Sunday morning talk shows and suggested, wrongly, that the attacks on the consulate in Benghazi were a spontaneous protest against an obscure anti-Islam film. “For Secretary of State, you want somebody who’ll actually think about these issues, make reasoned decisions and ask tough questions.” Senator Barrasso told Jansing. “And I think she’s failed that.” Rice defended her statements, saying that she was simply going off the talking points put together by intelligence officials.
