Another week, another conspiracy theory from the far right.
Leading the pack this week is Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert was one of the original members of the “birther” crowd. Since then, Gohmert has made other accusations against the president, including the suggestion that he is trying to create a new “Ottoman Empire” in the Middle East. Rep. Gohmert joined a group of other Congressional Republicans who alleged that Huma Abedin, one of Hillary Clinton’s closest aides, had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and was infiltrating the Obama Administration. Gohmert and four other members of Congress presented letters to several government agencies requesting an investigation into the issue.
Many legislators on both sides of the aisle quickly came to Abedin’s defense, including Arizona Senator John McCain, who called the charge “an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman.”
Congressman Gohmert is back with a new theory. In an interview with neoconservative radio host Frank Gaffney, Gohmert discussed what he called the “horrendous decisions” made by the White House about the Mideast, speculating that the president is getting “advice” from the Muslim Brotherhood.
