Mitt Romney is re-entering politics with some unlikely former foes by his side.
All-star politicos from former Obama adviser David Axelrod to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will be headlining a policy retreat hosted by the failed GOP presidential candidate in Park City, Utah, in June. In an email to supporters obtained by The Boston Globe, Romney wrote that Rep. Paul Ryan, his former running mate, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson also plan to attend.
Titled “Experts and Enthusiasts,” the public policy event will span over four days and will feature a range of politicians and business leaders. The other speakers scheduled to attend are Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard, Harvard Business School professor Clayton M. Christensen, Arthur Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute, and Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems.
Romney wrote in the announcement, “As I indicated in your invitation, I have drawn speakers from government and business to identify key opportunities ahead. And I have made sure to invite presenters from both sides of the aisle.”
The former presidential candidate also disclosed that the fee is not a political contribution and will cover a portion of the cost of the retreat. According to Politico, the fee is reported to cost $5,000. In an email sent to invitees last month, Romney wrote that Solamere Group, the investment firm where he and his son Tagg work, will help sponsor the retreat. A source close to the Romneys revealed to The Boston Globe that Tuesday’s email only went out to “an intimate group” of invitees.
