Today’s edition of quick hits.
* The latest on the Indiana shooting: “Two people were killed and two police officers were injured in a shooting at a supermarket in Indiana on Monday evening, local police say. Police received a call at 5:30 p.m. about the shooting at Martin’s Supermarket in the 500 block of East Jackson Boulevard in the city of Elkhart, about 15 miles east of South Bend. Officers arrived at the scene and found two victims dead inside.”
* In Kansas: “The number of tuberculosis cases linked to an outbreak in the Kansas City area continues to swell, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The outbreak, which began a year ago, killed two people in 2024, Jill Bronaugh, the health department’s communications director, said in an update Tuesday. As of Friday, at least 67 patients were being treated for active tuberculosis in Kansas.”
* A deeply unflattering report for North Carolina’s senior senator: “A key witness in the contentious Senate confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was assured by Sen. Thom Tillis (R., N.C.) that her sworn statement would carry weight in last week’s vote and could persuade Republican senators to oppose the nominee, according to people familiar with the events.”
* An unexpected story out of Tallahassee: “Gov. Ron DeSantis suffered a stunning defeat courtesy of his own party Monday as the Legislature refused to hold a special session dealing with immigration and ballot initiatives that he forced on their chambers, instead quickly gaveling out.”
* Trouble at the FDIC: “A government-wide hiring freeze has led the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to yank job offers to more than 200 new examiners, the front-line employees who closely monitor banks to ensure they operate safely and adhere to an extensive rule book.”
