Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In a closely watched congressional special election, Arizona’s Adelita Grijalva, a former member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, won a Democratic primary with relative ease this week. The victory puts her on track to succeed her father, the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who died earlier this year.
* In New York City, Andrew Cuomo struggled badly in the city’s recent Democratic mayoral primary contest, but the former governor announced that he’s staying in the race anyway, and will run as an independent against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.
* With 16 weeks remaining before Election Day in Virginia, the Democratic National Committee announced a new $1.5 million investment this week. Voters in the commonwealth will vote in the fall for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates.
* Donald Trump has made no secret of the fact that he’s determined to end Rep. Thomas Massie’s career, but The Associated Press reported that the Kentucky Republican has nevertheless enjoyed strong fundraising in recent months, despite the president’s offensive.
* Speaking of the Bluegrass State, Trump said this week, in reference to Republican Sen. Rand Paul: “I got him elected.” Paul first ran in 2010, while Trump was still hosting a reality show, and the GOP candidate did not receive any meaningful backing from the future president at the time.
* Speaking of fundraising, the National Republican Congressional Committee has been raising money by selling T-shirts that joke about immigrants being mauled by alligators at a detention facility known in some circles as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
* In Iowa, Republican Rep. Zach Nunn was reportedly eyeing a 2026 gubernatorial campaign, but after a meeting with Trump this week, the GOP congressman announced he’ll run for re-election instead.
* And in Florida, Robin Peguero, who worked as a lawyer for the bipartisan Jan. 6 committee, kicked off a Democratic congressional campaign this week. He hopes to take on Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar in a Miami-area district.
