The harrowing survival epic “The Revenant” leads the Oscar race with 12 nominations, including best picture.
The acclaimed film also scored nods for star Leonardo DiCaprio, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and supporting actor Tom Hardy.
The high-octane action thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road” followed with 10 nominations, including best picture.
“The Martian,” Ridley Scott’s sci-fi adventure with Matt Damon, racked up seven nominations, including best picture. The film’s director, Ridley Scott, was not nominated.
The best picture category also includes the financial-meltdown saga “The Big Short,” the touching period piece “Brooklyn,” the wrenching character study “Room,” the Cold War-era drama “Bridge of Spies” and the journalism docu-drama “Spotlight.”
The acting categories were, for the second year in a row, populated entirely by white performers.
