A new poll today finds that while President Obama and Mitt Romney are in a statistical dead heat in 12 swing states, the President has a significant edge in voter enthusiasm. USA Today and Gallup report the President has just a 2% lead over Romney in a head-to-head match-up, which is well within the 4% margin of error.
But the survey also finds 57% of Democrats in swing states say they are very or extremely enthusiastic about the election in November, while just 46% of Republicans say the same thing. In the five polls that USA Today and Gallup have conducted in swing states since the fall, this is the first time President Obama has led in enthusiasm. Back in December 61% of Republicans said they were very or extremely enthusiastic about the election, compared with just 47% of Democrats. Swing states decide elections, and it appears the brutal GOP primary fight, or the presumptive nominee selected by it, has taken a toll on battleground voters.
