There is an incredible amount of information that keeps coming in, quite rapidly, about the mass shooting this morning at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. We devoted our entire show this afternoon to the shooting, including a live briefing from President Obama and CT Governor Malloy. President Obama said:
They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. So our hearts are broken today. For the parents and grandparents, sisters, and brothers of these little children. And for the families of the adults who were lost. As a country, we have been through this too many times, and we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this.
Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy held his own press conference and said “You can never be prepared for this type of tragedy.”
According to Connecticut State Police, 20 children and 6 adults were shot at the school, 18 students died at the school and 2 later died at the hospital. The shooter was confirmed dead at the scene. In addition, one more adult died at a secondary crime scene. In total, 28 were killed this morning.
This attack is one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. The Virginia Tech shooting claimed 32 lives in 2007,12 students and one teacher died at the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Colorado.
