A Republican congressional candidate in Wisconsin has allegedly said that allowing gay couples to wed in the state could lead to incestuous marriages.
Karen Mueller, who is running in the state’s GOP primary for a seat in the House, cited a hypothetical situation involving two sisters as an example.
“We’ve got, for instance, two sisters, and these two sisters want to get married. They love each other. They are committed to each other. They want to spend the rest of their life together,” she said during a “meet the candidate” forum earlier this week, according to The Tomah Journal newspaper.
Their lawyers, Mueller added, could argue: “‘We can just do away with that state law the same way we did away with sodomy laws.’ Once you do away with that, you reveal what is really going on here.”
Mueller is a civil rights and employment law attorney. She did not return msnbc’s multiple requests for an additional explanation of her views.
In an earlier interview with WisconsinEye, Mueller said she believes same-sex marriage is an issue states must debate individually. A federal judge temporarily halted gay couples from marrying in Wisconsin, one week after declaring that the ban on such unions was unconstitutional. The earlier ruling had cleared the way for more than 500 same-sex marriages to occur. Mueller recently took to her public Facebook account to call for President Barack Obama’s impeachment based on the “lawlessness” she said is happening in the nation’s capital. Additionally, she added, “the Constitution is being shredded.” The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 12.
