President Donald Trump officially endorsed former Gov. Andrew Cuomo for New York City mayor on Monday, just one day before the highly anticipated general election.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” Trump wrote at the end of a long Truth Social post, referencing the Democratic nominee for mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
Earlier that day, Trump had already reluctantly offered support to Cuomo in a “60 Minutes” interview, saying, “I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it’s going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’m going to pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you.” Trump has repeated false claims that Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is a communist.
Tesla CEO and tech billionaire Elon Musk, who briefly worked in the second Trump administration, also endorsed Cuomo on Monday. “Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is. VOTE CUOMO!” Musk posted on X.
Cuomo previously said he wouldn’t accept a Trump endorsement. His campaign did not immediately respond to MSNBC’s request for comment. Mamdani’s campaign immediately capitalized on the opportunity to take aim at his opponent, posting a graphic announcing Trump’s and Musk’s endorsements with the caption: “Congratulations, @AndrewCuomo. I know how hard you worked for this.” Cuomo initially ran as a Democrat, but after a stunning loss in July’s primary election to the much younger, less experienced Mamdani, Cuomo announced he would run as an independent in the general election.
