A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection to Sunday’s bombing of a Planned Parenthood in Grand Chute, Wisconsin.
The Last Word confirms with police officials, 50-year-old Francis Gerald Grady has been charged with arson of a building used in interstate commerce in violation of title 18, as well as, intentionally damaging property of a facility that provides reproductive health services.
Local and federal authorities believe a homemade explosive device was planted on a clinic windowsill on Sunday evening. The device exploded causing a small fire and minor damage to an examination room. No injuries were reported.
In a very Last Word interview last night, Michelle Goldberg, author of The Means of Reproduction: Sex, Power & the Future of the World explains how anti-abortion violence historically comes in waves.
According to Goldberg, even though we aren’t seeing the epidemic of homicidal violence like we saw in late 90s under the Clinton administration there appears to be a growing dissatisfaction among those she calls, ‘anti-abortion’ terrorists. Goldberg goes on to say, “typically when you see anti-abortion violence..it really seems to explode when the movement is politically thwarted.” Goldberg says despite, what appears to be a successful legislative year in some states for the anti-abortion movement, there hasn’t been real success in changing the US government’s approach to reproductive health. Gallup conducted telephone interviews from March 25th and 26th and found federal policies about birth control is not one of the top election issues going into the general election. Gallup reports “the finding that voters place the controversial issue of federal policies about birth control well below economic, healthcare, and international issues confirms this basic fact of political life. Family values issues may be of paramount importance to some smaller segments of the population — one of a number of so-called niche issues — but birth control will clearly not be voters’ main focus in this campaign.”
