A British auction company claims to have a vial of blood from President Ronald Regan’s.
The Uxbridge Gazette reports:
The five-inch vial, said to contain a sample of the president’s blood taken at the George Washington University Hospital after an assassination attempt in 1981, is being sold on an online auction site.
With just a little under two days left in the auction, bids are already over $14,000.
John Heubusch, executive director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in California, issued a statement condemning the auction house.
“If indeed this story is true, it’s a craven act and we will use every legal means to stop its sale or purchase,” the statement said.
“We’ve spoken to GW Hospital and are assured an investigation as to how something like this could possibly happen is under way. Any individual, including a president of the United States, should feel confident that once they enter into the care of a medical system their privacy and rights are held inviolable.” A letter with the vial says the vial has been in the seller’s family since 1981. The seller’s mother worked at Bio Science Laboratories, which handled blood testing for George Washington Hospital. Reagan was shot by John Hinckly Jr on March 30, 1981, outside of the Washington Hilton Hotel. The auction house also has a piece of President George Washington’s coat and six strands of his hair up for grabs.
