Rumors are circulating on what type of deal legendary baseball player Alex Rodriguez will take as he is being investigated for steroid use. In this week’s Sports Illustrated, the cover story focuses on the Yankee slugger who says “I’m not giving up. I have tremendous faith, and hopefully there’s a couple more chapters to this book. And hopefully there’s a happy ending somewhere. I have faith.”
“The thing that strikes me about Alex Rodriguez is he got caught before, he was publicly humiliated,” Sports Illustrated Executive Director BJ Schecter said on Thursday’s show. “He didn’t need to cheat. He was one of the most talented players of our generation. Certainly the best hitter in the game, he didn’t need to do this but he didn’t learn his lesson and there we are again.”
This is Rodriguez’s second offense; according to Biohensis documents he used performance-enhancing drugs from 2010-2012 but he has never been punished. Normally, players who violate the MLB drug policy are subject to a 50-game suspension. The commissioner, Bud Selig, has the power to ban him for life.
“MLB is now finally after all these years saying we are not going to allow this into our game, we are not going to allow dirty players to continue to garner headlines and get all this money and set bad examples for kids,” Schecter says. “So I think if [Selig] follows through, which it looks like he will, he will be looked on with great praise in 10 or 15 years from now.”
