Today’s installment of campaign-related news items that won’t necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:
* The latest New York Times/CBS News poll shows President Obama leading each of his Republican rivals in hypothetical matchups. Mitt Romney comes closest, and he trails by six, 48% to 42%. The two were tied in the same poll a month ago.
* A new CNN poll shows Rick Santorum leading Romney at the national level, 34% to 32%. It’s easily Santorum’s strongest showing in any CNN poll since the race began.
* Santorum is busy trying to manage expectations in Michigan, telling reporters yesterday, “We hope we can plant our flag there and do well, and hopefully finish a good strong second.”
* Speaking of Santorum and the Midwest, a new Quinnipiac poll shows the former senator taking the lead in Ohio. Santorum is now ahead of Romney in the Buckeye State, 36% to 29%.
* And speaking of Ohio, Quinnipiac also found incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) leading state Treasurer Josh Mandel (R), 48% to 35%.
* In a bit of a surprise, President Obama’s campaign is doing better with small donors in 2012 than it did in 2008. * Sen. Scott Brown’s (R-Mass.) far-right position on contraception access did not go unnoticed by his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren. * As Texas’ redistricting process drags on, the state’s Republican presidential primary will likely be delayed until May, if not later. * The DNC announced yesterday that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) will be named the chairman of the Democratic National Convention this year.
