Conservatives in Mississippi had wondered if the Personhood Amendment could get passed by 86 percent, the amount by which voters banned gay marriage in 2004. The Personhood Amendment, Initiative 26, would ban all abortion, without exception, outlaw common forms of birth control, and present serious legal problems for fertility treatment.
A new poll suggests that’s going too far a significant share of Mississippians. Public Policy Polling says the race is a statistical tie, with 11 percent of the voters still undecided. Another big question on the ballot tomorrow, whether to make voting harder, looks to be comfortably ahead.
The crosstabs show that Personhood has failed to cement an overwhelming majority among conservatives. Among voters who identify as “somewhat conservative,” 41 percent oppose the measure. Among the “very conservative,” 21 percent say they’ll vote no. Compare that with the conservative response for making voting harder, Initiative 27 — with 79 percent and 88 percent, respectively, saying they back the measure.
