Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In the race to replace retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R), voters in Tennessee nominated former Gov. Phil Bredesen (D) and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) in their respective primaries, and most observers believe Bredesen has a legitimate shot.
* On a related note, thanks to the results of U.S. House primaries in Tennessee yesterday, the Volunteer State will now have an all-male House delegation in the next Congress.
* Donald Trump yesterday issued a new endorsement of Rep. Steve Stivers (R), urging Ohio voters to support him in next week’s primary. The trouble, however, is that Stivers isn’t competing in a primary next week.
* In New Hampshire, state Senate Minority Leader Jeff Woodburn (D) was arrested on domestic-violence and trespassing charges. Leaders from both parties have called on the Granite State Democrat to resign.
* In New York’s 24th district, which is expected to be competitive this year, a new survey from Public Policy Polling shows incumbent Rep. John Katko (R) trailing his Democratic challenger, Dana Balter (D), by four points. * In New York’s 19th district, meanwhile, where Rep. John Faso (R) is generally seen as a vulnerable incumbent, Antonio Delgado (D) is facing an unexpected problem: there will be several center-left independent candidates on the ballot, as well as a Green Party candidate, increasing Faso’s odds by splitting his opposition. * And in Hawaii’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, it looked for a while like Rep. Colleen Hanabusa was very well positioned to defeat Gov. David Ige, but there’s fresh polling evidence that suggests the incumbent is closing strong. Primary Day is Aug. 11.
