The election for the next Massachusetts governor isn’t until November 2014, but if early poll results are any indication, Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley won’t have much to worry about.
According to a WBUR and MassINC Polling Group poll released Wednesday that matched up all the gubernatorial candidates, Coakley would come out on top against front-runner Republican candidate Charlie Baker, 39-29.
As the state’s attorney general, Coakley is already a public figure — it’s not uncommon for her name to be printed and called out on the radio. The attention may have helped push her lead in the poll. What is undeniable, though, is how many people are aware of her, which is evidently something her opponents are suffering from.
The poll, which surveyed 504 registered voters, revealed that only 3% of voters said they have not heard of Coakley. On the flip-side, most voters admitted to never having heard of the other three Democrats or independents. Twenty-five percent had never heard of Baker.
Along with Baker, the 2010 Republican nominee, Democratic state treasurer Steve Grossman, former homeland security official Juliette Kayyem, former Medicare and Medicaid administrator Don Berwick, and biotech executive Joe Avellone are also vying for a chance to be governor. More than 70% had never heard of Kayyem, Berwick, or Avellone. The poll was conducted Jan. 16-19 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.4%.
