Utah’s Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch said that gay marriage will be legal across the country in time, though he doesn’t agree with it.
“Let’s face it: anybody who does not believe that gay marriage is going to be the law of the land just hasn’t been observing what’s going on,” Hatch said on the local KSL-Radio program The Doug Wright Show.
Hatch, a seven-term Republican who opposes gay marriage, said he doesn’t agree with the recent slew of pro-gay marriage rulings, but defended two judges who had issued such rulings in his home state.
“How do you blame the judge for deciding a case in accordance with what the Supreme Court has already articulated?” Hatch said.
Hatch recommended both of the judges for the bench. He did criticize one of the judges, Robert Shelby, saying he should have stayed his own ruling when he struck down the gay marriage ban to allow the appeals process to play out before couples began wedding. Shelby refused and thousands wed before the Supreme Court issued a stay. “Sooner or later gay marriage is probably going to be approved by the Supreme Court of the United States, and certainly as the people in this country move toward it, especially young people,” Hatch said. “I don’t think that’s the right way to go, on the other hand, I do accept whatever the courts have to say.”
