As crises in the Middle East and Ukraine roil on, a humanitarian crisis on the United States’ southern border continues to drive diplomatic and political debate in this hemisphere.
President Obama met with Central American leaders on Friday to discuss solutions. That meeting came just hours after his administration appeared to be shifting away from its previous position supporting expedited deportations in favor of using refugee or humanitarian options for some of the Central American children and families seeking asylum in the United States. At the same time Republicans have called for rolling back executive actions that provide relief for undocumented youth in this country.
Host Melissa Harris-Perry, at the top of Saturday’s show, will break down which U.S. policies are really contributing to this crisis and how the fight for recognition and citizenship mirror the civil rights battles of the 1960’s.
Plus, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) says she’s not running for president, but those demurrals have done little to quell the hopes of progressive activists who yearn for a contested Democratic primary between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the anti-Wall Street crusader. Our host and her panel will discuss the similarities between the incipient drive to draft Senator Warren and the Obama campaign in the years leading up to the 2008 primary. We’ll also talk about Massachusetts’ other liberal firebrand who just may be positioning himself as a Democratic alternative in 2016.
We’ll also talk about the pair of new appeals court rulings this week that some have said could threaten the future of Obamacare. Two conservative judges on a three judge panel argued that an effective typo in the Affordable Care Act is grounds for dramatically increasing the cost of healthcare for people living in 36 states. A second panel of judges overturned that first devastating ruling using an analogy involving Domino’s Pizza. Harris-Perry will explain that and the implications for the future of health care in America.
