With Governor Jerry Brown at the helm, California implemented one of the country’s toughest gender pay gap bills, curbed racial profiling, enacted a right-to-die law, and approved an aggressive climate change bill. These are big wins for progressives that lead us to wonder, what’s next for the state? Melissa talks to her panel about the future of California and the reasons behind this progressive lean.
What constitutes a disability? This has been the heart of a recent debate concerning the Compton school district. Many of the students in the district have witnessed or experienced a traumatic event. Last year Compton’s murder rate was more than five times the national average. Now a group of students are in a legal fight in order to shift the school district’s resources on helping rather than punishing students who have faced severe trauma.
As we see GOP presidential candidates battle it out on debate stages, the top tier begins to narrow. Rubio’s performance in the last debate has earned him the endorsement of fellow senators as well as a boost in the polls. Rubio is now taking an abrasive stance in an effort to continue bolstering support from the GOP. He recently announced that as President he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program which protects young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. Is this the candidate who can emerge from the crowded field? Melissa turns to her political panel for our discussion.
She was recently named one of the most influential teens of 2015 for her life on and off the screen. Now Amandla Stenberg is revamping the world of comics with the release of, Niobe: She is Life, which is the first comic to feature a black writer, illustrator, and lead. Melissa talks to Stenberg about her inspiration behind the comic and her latest work.
