Donald Trump once again is not allowed to comment on Judge Arthur Engoron’s court staff, after a state appeals court panel on Thursday reimposed a limited gag order in the former president’s New York civil fraud case. The order had been temporarily lifted by an appeals judge as Trump sought to get the order tossed.
Engoron previously imposed the order following Trump’s social media posting about Engoron’s law clerk, whom Trump and his lawyers have contrived as a foil in the ongoing $250 million fraud case that threatens his business empire. The judge has already fined Trump twice for violating the gag order, for a relatively meager $15,000 total.
Engoron had also extended a gag order to Trump’s lawyers, which was likewise paused and is now reinstated. Trump’s lawyers cited the gags in a mistrial motion that Engoron denied earlier this month.
Trump ranted against Engoron and the clerk on Truth Social while the order was paused. The appeals court reimposed it after hearing of a “deluge” of threats targeting the clerk following the leading GOP presidential candidate’s complaints about her. NBC News reported Thursday that Engoron informed the parties of the reimposed orders and said he intends to “rigorously” and “vigorously” enforce them.
