On what she called “the happiest moment of [her] life,” Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai announced the first grant from her education charity, the Malala Fund, in a video message during the Newsweek/Daily Beast Women in the World summit Thursday.
The $45,000 grant raised in partnership with the Women in the World Foundation, Vital Voices, and Angelina Jolie will be used to educate 40 girls in Yousafzai’s native Pakistan. Because of security concerns, the exact name and location of the program is not being disclosed publicly.
Jolie introduced Yousafzai’s video message after chronicling the work of the young Pakistani activist, who was shot in the head last October while riding on her school bus by a Taliban gunman.
Yousafzai received treatment in Birmingham, England, where she successfully underwent cranial reconstruction and cochlear implant surgeries. She is currently attending school in the U.K.
